Education and building community are main priorities for us at Gateway Farm. We work in collaboration with our partners Garden Juju Collective to provide educational offerings to build skills and community.
Story Time
Story Time is a weekly gathering for little ones (geared toward children under 8) and their grown ups to hear stories, walk the farm, explore what’s in season and spend time outside, in nature, together. Come meet the farmers, learn how food grows, and experience the season together.
Each week a story is featured about farming, food, nature and/or the environment. The storyteller will be from one of our suitably experienced staff members. This educational service is free and by donation to cover the farm’s costs.
Story Time for 2026 will run June 1st through Sept 28th. We gather every Monday at 10:30am for a short activity on the farm and a story that will start around 10:45am. Please dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes and bring drinks if you need them. We will be walking around the farm on uneven ground so plan appropriately. We will meet at the Little Yellow Farm Stand @ 10665 Joy Road, Plymouth.
Introduction to Permaculture Design, Gardening & Food Forests

In this one-day workshop we give insights into and tools for 4 different aspects of permaculture. Drawing from Garden Juju Collective’s international projects, teaching and research we present -
Introduction to the Permaculture worldview
Design and site analysis
Growing perennial and heritage foods
Establishing a food forest
Permaculture empowers us with critical knowledge and equips us to meet the challenges and opportunities of this current time. The study and practice of permaculture encompasses 1) homesteading, farm and garden design for abundance and sustainability, 2) perennial permaculture gardens and food forests, and 3) how to design and put into practice sustainable living systems – this can be applied landscapes, but it can also guide our design principles for life in general, whether we have land or not.. . . . . . .

Please arrive around 8:30am for refreshments and registration.
Lunch and snacks will be supplied.

2027 Permaculture Design Course - Plymouth, Michigan

Join us for this foundational 72-hour Permaculture Design Course delivered by a team of teachers from Garden Juju Collective and other guest presenters. This hybrid format of 8 immersive days on the beautiful yet working Gateway Farm and 5 online day sessions combines the best of learning in place in a group with flexible learning from wherever you are. This PDC is highly practical yet inspiring, with both local and global insights and showcases. The teaching team are practicing educators, designers, farmers and with decades of applied experience across four continents.

All the Ways We Educate People and Community at Gateway Farm
At Gateway Farm, we're educating on a daily basis. The farm itself is a showcase of a peri-urban, permaculture-inspired, regenerative, and community-oriented approach to agriculture.
We find ourselves conveying insights, skills, relationships, and approaches around organic growing, no-till cultivation, regenerative agriculture, conservation and rewilding, and how to build and manage water and soil quality. Our children's storytime encourages nature and food systems connection. While our workers, interns, and volunteers learn organic pest control, organic ways to boost soil productivity, and the cultivation and harvesting of hundreds of food heritage crops that belong to all of us.
Workers learn how to store, present, and sell our diverse produce to the community — and in turn, the community learns about the farm and its particular sustainability practices. Visitors to our farm-to-table dinners, as well as those who take our farm tours (including schools and universities), have their eyes opened to these ways of relating to and practicing landcare and farming.
Teaching and learning are woven through everything we do at Gateway Farm. This work is also informed by our collaboration with Garden Juju Collective, with an emphasis on creating community connection and a sense of place. As Gateway Farm grows - both literally and as a brand and destination - so does the message of how we can create healthy places for our collective nourishment.
